While Southeast part of the United States is very sought for bike getaway for Midwesterners and northeasterners throughout the dead of winter, a lot of riders in the northern Rockies want some escape as well. Luckily, the desert southwest is loaded with amazing and epic destinations. Here is the list of some of the best places in Southwest USA for your mountain biking:


Doctor Park is acknowledged as one of the most amazing and fun downhill rides throughout Gunnison County. The trail can be run as shuttle, loop or out and back if you wish. Once you’re at the top, you’ll encounter majestic views of surrounding mountains before tacking one amazing descent. The trail will begin rocky and rough before smoothing out to offer you an ear-to-ear grin that will last for five miles.


This has to be the best mountain bike anywhere, linking 4 classic Moab trails – Porcupine, Kokopelli Tail, Hazzard County, Burro Pass – on a journey from the high alpine down below the red rock cliffs. Beginning 11,150 feet, you drop more than 8,000 feet, powering through cool evergreen forests, past the Warner Lake and into rolling the Gamble oak-covered slopes and into 2 track over the famous slick-rock of Moab. This is almost downhill but it does not denote that it’s simple, rock drops, slick roots, stream crossings and a lot of features require concentration.


This trail is known by most to be the premier cross-country ride throughout New Mexico, and for a good reason. It provides 22 miles of downhill singletrack cruising through the dark and deep evergreen forest, meadows and aspen glades, offering excellent views and some technical challenges at the end to offer you a dose of adrenaline rush to complete the ride. It does not get better than this.

This epic mountain drops from open-meadow, Elk County at approximately 10,700 feet on the Sangre de Cristo range of the Northeast New Mexico all the way down to the piñon pines and scrub oaks at least 3,500 feet below in Taos. Most riding is on root-filled, loamy and tight single track through the dark-timbers of light-post size aspens.


Hangover is a wonderfully technical trail, with extreme consequences once you mess up. With technical features, wide-open views, tight single track, steep rock rolls, serious exposure and even more rocks, this mountain biking destination in Southwest is perhaps the most technical one. However, it is not suited for everyone; however, if you are eager to get outside of your own comfort zone and deal with some technical challenges, this is a perfect trail for you.


Thunder Mountain is best popular for its stunning scenery reminiscent of its neighbor Bryce Canyon. If you wish to ride terrains like Cedar Breaks and Bryce Canyon, this is the perfect place. Smooth single-track and red rock combined in with some free technical sections. Make sure to bring your camera with you.
